Lessons in Empathy: What Every Private Investigator and Security Guard Should Know

As a private investigator, security guard or loss prevention officer, we often forget that our daily work can seem extraordinary to others.

I want to share two important ideas.

First, it’s essential to be gentle with the people around you. They may be clients or victims who are facing tough situations. They come to us because they need help, not because they’re having a good day. Often, they are dealing with serious issues, like cheating partners or being taken advantage of at work. When someone comes to you with a problem, try to be understanding. Instead of rolling your eyes or asking why they didn’t call the police, show them compassion. Remember, they are likely feeling overwhelmed and maybe scared.

Second, if you work in criminal defense or are interviewing people involved in auto accidents or crimes, keep in mind that you might not always be talking to the most upright of people. Sometimes, you’ll be dealing with individuals who have made bad choices. Even in these situations, it’s important to be respectful and compassionate. Everyone has a story, and treating them with kindness can make a difference.

For those of us in security, whether we’re dealing with panhandlers or trespassers, it’s crucial to approach these situations gently. Yes, you might need to remove someone from the property, but remember that they are human beings with their own struggles.

Another key point to remember is to be gentle with yourself.

When you face a new challenge or situation for the first time, don’t be too hard on yourself. No amount of training can replace real experience. If you make a mistake, that’s usually okay. You’ll learn and do better next time. And in our line of work, there will always be a next time!

So, as you go about your day, be kind to others and to yourself. Enjoy the unique experiences that come with this job. Over time, you will gather many stories that others may never have. This work can be fulfilling, so embrace the journey and keep learning.

God loves you and has an amazing plan for your life!

So remember: Do the right thing, even when it’s the hard thing.
