Don’t make this Loss Prevention Officer mistake.

For my brothers and sisters working as loss prevention officers, allow me to share with you this retail loss prevention training to protect you from committing an accidental body cavity search. This actually happens!

At first you think this could never happen to you, but it happens a lot and every now and then it turns into a career killing lawsuit.

As I explain in the video, a teen girl will com into your store and steal something small like a bracelet.

She’ll decide it’s a good idea to hide it in her mouth.

She leaves the store. Loss prevention stops her. She denies the theft. And the Loss Prevention Officer says, “It’s in your mouth. Open you mouth.

That’s it right there. A “body cavity search”. Sure, it’s only looking in the thief’s mouth. Sure, there’s no touching. Sure she stole it. But none of that matters when her lawyers file a law suite against you and your store.

The lawyers will write up the narrative truthfully, but the general public will be grossly mislead and think the worst.

The store will settle out of court “without admitting any wrong doing”, but your name is mud.

Heck, you might even find the accusation becomes the first result when you type your name into a search engine!

But now that you know about this, I expect you to avoid getting anywhere near this costly mistake.

And always remember: Do the right thing even if its the hard thing.

An Easy Lead Magnet for Private Investigators

A “lead magnet” is a free resource you offer to potential customers or clients I exchanged for their contact information – usually their email address so you have a new potential lead to follow-up with to promote your service (which, ideally, is the solution to their problem).

Miranda Rights and Interviews

Do you have to read Miranda Rights to a subject, suspect or witness in a private investigation case you working?

IMHO, nope.

Miranda Rights are the rights that protect us from the government in the US.

You’ve heard them a million times on TV shows and in the movies… “You have the right to remain silent…”, etc.

Now, check with a lawyer if you need legal advice. This is just my experience from decades in the security and investigative profession, but since we are private citizens and not “agents of the state”, we don’t have to Mirandize people.

Internal Theft vs External Theft

There are two types of theft in retail and any company really: internal theft which is employees stealing from you and external theft where outsides steal from you including organized retail crime (ORC) and flash thefts where a mob of people rush a store and basically just grab and run!

These losses are not just theft like shoplifting but also fraud – including vendor fraud.

The Losses

The loss from a nay individual external theft is typically much less than from an internal theft. That means if the average shoplifter steals, say $100 then the average external theft is a multiple of that. Let’s say $200 or $300 dollars. And, while shoplifters may go from store to store stealing, the internal thefts continue until you catch them!

How to spot merchandise passing at the register…

There are text overlay devices you can attach to your security camera system to monitor and record exactly what is happening on the cash register right on the security video! Super helpful for catching internal theft!

Your Career

Finally, internal thefts are a much safer case to make. Yes, physically safer, but also mush less risk of getting it wrong!

With shoplifters things move fast. They can ditch the merchandise at the last moment and be empty handed when you catch them. Ouch.

But with internals you have plenty of time to collect evidence and review your case. Heck, you can consult with your District Manager if you want!

Plus, companies love to catch internals. Love it. So it’s particularly good for advancing your career within your company!
