Is Private Investigator work cool?

Is the work we do as private investigators “cool” like you see on TV and in the movies?

Inside or Outside

If you’re an “insider”, someone who actually works in the security and investigations profession, you may be tempted to say “no”.

I get it. It certainly isn’t like on TV. Well… rarely. And not every day that’s for sure!

But, to those “outside” our profession, yes(!), it’s very cool. And they have always thought it would be cool to be a private investigator. They think they would be good at it. Everyone.

The Truth

The reality is we work the same types of cases over and over. Skip Traces, surveillance, background checks, etc.

That means we see the same things over and over again. Even the interesting things can become commonplace for us.

Even the skills we use to crack a phone number or get an address are (pretty much) the same tricks used over and over.

I mean, every now and then you need to find a new source or method for a particularly tough piece of information, and that’s kinda’ “fun” to solve that problem. But generally, we do the same things day in and day out.

I will say this… we become better by solving the new problems. It forces us to grow and that’s a good thing! I love that!

Summary

I guess the best way to put it is…

Private Investigator work is cool, but routine.

Is that a fair assessment?

Let me know.

In the meantime, remember, do the right thing, even if it’s the hard thing.

A Magic Phrase to disagree and still get what you want.

Sometimes as a private investigator, process server, loss prevention officer or security guard you need to disagree with someone and still keep the conversation moving forward so you can make them do the thing you need them to do.

Maybe you need to get I.D. from someone trying to enter the building you’re guarding. Maybe you need to get a witness to give you a statement. Or maybe you need someone to give you on an address on a skip so you can serve her some court papers.

In a situation like that, try using the magic phrase, “I think there’s something to that.”

So the person says something like, “I’m not giving you her address because you’re just going to make her go to court and she didn’t do anything wrong!”

Try this… “Well, there something to be said for that, but if she doesn’t get these papers she’s going to have no idea what’s going on with the case and if they server her by publication, just printing it in the back of the newspaper, they’ll move forward in the case without her and she can lose with out even showing up.”

Note how you’re not “disagreeing” with the person. You’re acknowledging there is some truth to what they’re saying, but you’re not saying what’s true about it or how much it’s true. Very clever.

I didn’t include this Magic Phrase in my book 51 Magic Phrases to Get What You Want:The Secrets of Instant Influence for Private Investigators, Process Servers, Security Guards and You! That means this is a bonus magic phrase if you’ve already got the book.

51 Magic Phrases to Get What You Want

51 Magic Phrases to Get What You Want: The Secrets of Instant Influence for Private Investigators, Process Servers, Security Guards and You!

Stalker Counter-Surveillance.

If you’re being follow by a car, you need to make the counter-surveillance choice of whether you want to lose the tail or “out” your tail (meaning discover who is following you)!

Losing the Tail

Losing the tail may be as simple as making 3 or 4 left hand turns. This pretty much alerts the person following you that you know you’re being follow and they likely will “break the tail” and leave on their own. It works!

Outing the Tail

“Outing” a tail means discovering who is following you.

This may start with the simple step of noting their license plate before you lose them. You may not being able to turn that license plate number into a name and address, but the police can!

Or you may want to try this…

Call the police and tell them where you are and describe the car following you.

If you feel it’s safe to do so, let the car continue to follow you until the police arrive and stop him. Note: that can take a long time. The delay between what you tell the call taker and what the cop on the street hears can cause confusion about your location and delay the response. But the police will be trying to find you.

Once the police stop the car they start documenting all sorts of interesting information you can learn with a public records request!

There will be a record of the traffic stop, you can get a copy of any citation, ticket or written warning the driver receives and there might even be body camera video you can get a copy of!

Not to shabby.

Talk about turning the tables on a stalker who want’s to remain anonymous.

I hope you find this helpful!

Try Surveillance 3 Times.

Even if you are deathly afraid to conduct surveillance as a Private Investigator, you should consider trying it three times and this week I explain to you exactly why!

1. Do it once to get over your fear.

Sure, even after you do surveillance once you may still be nervous about it. That’s natural! But the leap from zero to one time is HUGE!

The hardest surveillance to say yes to is your first one. But once you get #1 under your belt, they become easier. In fact, much easier.

2. Do it a second time to gain competency.

Of course you’re not going to be a seasoned pro after your first surveillance, but the second time you’ll have less tunnel vision and the skills you practice will make you better.

3. Do it a third time to see if you like it.

I have to admit, even after nine years as a licensed private investigator, I never loved surveillance. But I did love the results I could get from doing surveillance!

The third time you conduct surveillance you’ll have a much better idea whether or not you really want to be doing it as part of how you make a living as a Private Investigator.

Honestly, it’s just not for everyone. And that’s perfectly okay! Perfectly okay. Don’t beat yourself up.

But, if you discover it’s something you want to be doing and you’re fear was what was keeping you from it, That’s a really big deal!

If you think you need to know more about how to conduct either mobile surveillance or a stake-out (stationary surveillance) then be sure to check out The Investigator’s Ultimate Guide to Surveillance. After you go through that online, learn at your own pace, streaming video training you’ll know you’ve got it all. No secrets are left out. I empty the bucket and share with you everything about surveillance. After that, you’re ready to go!

In the meantime, this is Larry Kaye reminding you to do the right thing, even if it’s the hard thing.
