Previously unreleased street fight video shot by a private investigator doing surveillance.

This week I share with you real surveillance video shot by me of a street game of craps turned into a fight when a sucker punch fails to end the fight on the first blow.

This wasn’t what I set out to record, but it was an interesting thing to witness!

I shot this video years ago and there is some derogation because of the video transfer technology at the time and, well, lets face it, it’s shot at night in a low light environment. Still… ask yourself if you would have captured this if you had been working at the time.

I hope the answer is yes!

Of course I’ve always got The Investigator’s Ultimate Guide to Surveillance training video if your interested.

Don’t be afraid to call the police, even if you’re not sure you should.

If you think you want to call the police, but you’re not sure because it’s a small crime/issue and you’re afraid the suspect will be gone by time the cops get there, here’s a strategy on how to talk to the police to stop them from coming if you decide you don’t really need them.

Two Magic Phrases

1. “I’d like to cancel a run.”

So you call the cops on a problem and then the aggressive panhandler, trespasser, drunk or whatever wanders off before the police arrive, you can call the police back (on the non-emergency line) and simply say, “I’d like to cancel a run, please.”

The police call-taker will ask you the location of the run and why you want to cancel.

Simply answer with the address you previously reported when you first called and explain why you no longer need the police. EG. “The guy wandered off. He’s not here anymore.”

They may still send an officer, but it’s most likely (if you’re a reasonable and calm caller) that they’ll happily cancel the run and save the officers from then unnecessary trip.

2. “I’d like to report a suspicious person.”

If you want to call the police but there’s not really been a crime (yet),it’s perfectly acceptable to call and report a suspicious person or vehicle.

Be prepared to say why you think what you’re reporting seems suspicious to you.

For example, you’ve never seen the car in the neighborhood before and it’s circled around three times. Or, there’s a guy sitting in the call watching kids in the park. Or whatever.

The cops can come out and check it out without you making some wild accusation about the person. You’re simply reporting what you see. See something, say something.

Amateur private investigators mob shame the wrong guy.

Some poor guy got public shamed on social media as Internet mob justice ruined his life when some amateur detectives thought he abducted a girl on a bike trail based on a geo-tagged photo, but the wanna’ be detectives failed to notice the date/time stamp!

Something like 55,000 re-tweets (literally!) jumped on the mob shaming – including posting this innocent man’s home address!

When it was DEFINITIVELY shown he was completely innocent, well… that only got something like 12 re-tweets. That is not a typo. Twelve re-tweets of his innocence.

Don’t be one of those turds who vomits online other people’s private information and/or accusations!

Show some professionalism. Whether you’re a professional or “amateur” P.I. – act like a pro!

If you absolutely think you have a missing piece of the puzzle that will help a criminal case, contact the police detective assigned to the case and share your tip with them!

Do the right thing, even if it’s the hard thing.

Don’t go to the police.

This week I share with you a mistake that’s made far too often when a person finds themselves being followed and attempts counter surveillance without having though it through before-hand or having never received proper training.

Look, if you’re being followed it’s perfectly right to call the police.

But… I would suggest you don’t “go to” the police – meaning don’t drive to a police substation thinking the police will be there to help you. ‘Cuz they won’t be.

Cops are out on the streets from most of their shift. Police officers aren’t sitting around at the substation waiting for some random person to drive up.

Sure, officers may be there for roll call or maybe stop-by to fill out some paperwork, but generally… they ain’t there.

So what are some of your other options if you don’t have a phone with you?

1. Don’t lead them back to your home.

2. Try driving to a fast food drive-through window and asking them to call the police for you.

3. Drive to a place with more people around.

4. Don’t stop your car.
(When you see a red light coming up, slow to a crawl if necessary, but keep rolling so when you arrive at the traffic light it’s green and you can keep driving.)

If you don’t stop your car, it’s really hard for a bad guy to jump in and hurt you.

5. Don’t drive to a place where you get blocked in.

But most of all… Use good judgement!

Take the tools I suggest here and factor them into your response.
