How to use your voice for greater Command Authority.

There are three ways to talk that each make your voice sound different and one of them gives you the greatest command authority.

1. You can talk through your nose.

This make your voice sound, well… nasally. Not a very effective sound to instill confidence or encourage someone to comply with your command. Honestly, while it’s not fair to judge a person by his/her voice, people think this nasal voice sounds weak.

2. You can speak from your mouth.

Well, duh! But i’s more than that.

Allowing your voice to project from your mouth is the normal. Everyday conversation voice most of us use. It sounds okay, but not really “commanding”.

3. You can speak from your chest!

This makes you sound more confident and in-charge.

You don’t have to make your voice sound deeper or try to sound more menacing. When you project your voice from your chest you naturally sound like someone who should be followed. Go figure.

Try speaking from your chest when you answer the phone. You’ll see it makes a difference. And when you give instructions or commands as a security guard, loss prevention officer, bounty hunter, repo agent, cop or process server you’ll see the difference!

6 Ways to Find Place of Employment (POE).

Finding place of employment (POE) is one of the most challenging things a private investigator is asked to discover because there’s no centralized database and that means the PI has to use good investigative skills and some P.I.’s struggle with that in this age of computer and online detectives!

I could tell you everything I know about finding POE and it would all come down to this…

It takes good investigative skills!

Of course, there are some tips and tricks that will help you so let me share some of them with you here.

Where to find place of employment…

1. Social Media

Of course! This is a no-brainer! And that means few clients are going to hire you when it’s just that easy.

2. Divorce Records

This is especially true when children are involved in the divorce because parents go back to court for “modification of child support” when job status changes and that keeps the file pretty up-to-date with a current employer.

3. Previous Employer Info

If you can find (or the client can tell you) a previous employer, that may lead you to the current employer through…

Interviewing the previous employer.
Pretexting the previous employer.
Through licensing for that industry. (Don’t miss this one listed below!)

4. Licensing

If you know the type of work your subject does (or has done), check to see if it requires a license or registration with a government agency. If so, search for the subject by name in the licensing records to find the employer who currently has them registered!

INSIDER TIP: Some “jobs” don’t require a license, but something they “do” on that job does require a license. For example: A Dental Assistant may not be required to to have a license, but if she works the x-ray machine she may need a radiology license.

5. Pretexting

Pretext may work on previous employers (and co-workers), family, friends, neighbors or even the subject himself!

6. Surveillance

To me this is the last resort for finding POE, but frequently it works.

Why someone took a picture of your house.

Take off your tinfoil hat for a moment (but keep it nearby – this is still a freaky world sometimes), but the most likely reason someone will drive-by and take a photo of your house is because of an appraisal when you refinance or buy a new home.

I’ve seen this first hand on my house and others.

I still recommend getting the license plate number and a description of the vehicle and driver, but if this happens to you, take a breath and understand that even in our world, it’s most likely a harmless thing related to legitimate business.

Are autopsy reports public record?

Short Answer: Yes

Fuller Answer…

As a private investigator you may never need to get or review an autopsy report, but, over the years it has come up for me and heres why…

Accident Litigation / Accident Investigations

If someone has died in a case you’re working on, you may need too get an autopsy report, but a lot of times you don’t because you are usually a “supplemental” investigator on the case.

I don’t want you to think your role is not important! In fact, it’s a term I just made-up to describe your role when a large law firm or insurance company has hired you to work any kind of accident investigation, but where they have doctor’s, lawyers and specialist “in-house” who do these investigations regularly. In those cases, they probably have someone who gets the autopsy report as a part of their standard operating procedures.

For Family Members

This is actually a little more common in my experience.

A family comes to you after the death of a loved on who was in someone else care. This may be a nursing home or a home for the care of the mentally handicapped.

The family is concerned because they know someone else died there earlier in the year of last year. The family wants to make sure the deaths aren’t related by negligence, bad care or maliciousness.

In a case like that, you’ll pull the autopsy reports for both parties and compare them looking for a common link or problem.

How to get an autopsy report…

You get an autopsy report the same as any other public record… you make a public records request.

Autopsies that may not (yet) be public record include ones involved in an active police or prosecutor’s investigation. But, in my experience, eventually, all autopsy reports become public record.

Bonus Tip: You can request autopsy reports specifying that you do not want any photos or videos if you don’t need that information.

Where do I request and autopsy record from?

Autopsy reports are usually held at the county level with the Coroner’s Office. They are your first stop requesting these reports.

You may find an autopsy report in other records you uncover like police files or prosecutor files and even in some lawsuits!
